Janai Purnima

I am Ojashwi Rai. I study in class 8

Janai Purnima is a sacred thread festival. On this day, Hindu men, especially the Brahmins and Chettris perform their annual change of Janai and all who celebrates this festival put a sacred thread around their wrist.

Janai is a cotton string worn across the chest by Hindu male. This thread is only given to males during a long and inpressive religious ceremony called Bratabandhan.
The Janai initiates the boy into manhood and commands them to devotedly follow the religion and the path of truth. The Janai must be worn every day of their lives after they listen their mantra from the guru during the Bartabandha. Janai is regarded as symbol of body, speech and mind, and when the knots are tied the person wearing it is supposed to gain complete control over each of them.

In this day we also eat kwati. As a belief that all our sickness will go away.

Gai Jatra

I am Ojashwi Rai. I study in grade 8.

Gai jatra is a festival celebrated in Nepal mainly in Kathmandu valley by Newar community. The festival commemorates the death of people during the year and is generally celebrated in the month of Bhadra (August- September). The date is set according to the lunar Nepal Era calendar: it falls on the first day of the dark fortnight of the month of [Gunla]. As cow is the national animal of Nepal. The Festival of Cows is one of the most popular festivals of Nepal. It is celebrated to diminish the sadness from the death of family members. During the festival, cows are marched in the streets. People also distribute food to others.

In the early morning, local Newars give a bath to the cow, especially cleaning their tails. Then the cows are decorated with red Tika and beautiful garlands. After those rituals, the cow processions begin to parade around the whole Kathmandu valley. If the cow is not available, young boys will dress up as cows to pray for the dead. During the boisterous marches, they will deliberately walk through the temples, the statues of the gods and other sacred places. When the parades pass by, many people will offer the food, gift and petty cash to the cow owners and the cow-like boys. It's believed that this kind of giving will bring them good luck in the following days.

Gai Jatra is a traditional festival for Newari people  and prevails in the three ancient cities in Nepal, namely, Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur. The details of the celebration may be different, but the core of the festival of cows is exactly the same.

Raksha Bandhan

I am Ojashwi Rai. I study in grade 8.

Raksha Bandhan is a festival mostly celebrated by Hindu people. Irrespective of caste and creed people from all walks of life participate in  this festival. It is celebrated on the full moon day of the lunar month. Raksha Bandhan is also known as Rakhi or Rakhi Purnima. The day signifies the mutual bond of love between siblings.

On this day, sisters of all ages apply tilak to the forehead of their brother and tie a sacred thread called rakhi on the wrist of their brother and do arati for their good health and long life. The brother in return provide gift to their sisters. The concept of raksha bandhan is mainly that of protection. The tying of a Rakhi is not confines to a brother and sister. It could also be tied by a wife to her husband, or by a disciple to the Guru. This bond does not have to be between blood relatives- a girl might adopt a boy as her brother through the tying of rakhi. This ritual not only strengthens the bond of of love, but also transcends the boundaries of the family. When rakhi is tied on the wrist of close friends and neighbors. it underscores the need for a harmonious social life.

Raksha bandhan symbolizes the unmatched bond of love, care and respect. But in a broader  perspective the festival of rakhi conveys an intrinsic message of universal brotherhood and sisterhood. Thus the festival rakhi conveys a message that has socio spiritual significance underscoring the need for nurturing of positive qualities, purity in thoughts, word and deed.
